Get to know This Uncommon Life.

This Uncommon Life helps experienced professionals turn what they already know into a profitable one-person business. Founders work with us through Plan A, our 8-week launch program with 1:1 coaching, and Uncommon Mentorship, ongoing 1:1 mentoring once their business is running. We also run The Shortlist, a free monthly live training, and in-person events for solo founders.

Get to know Uncommon Mentorship.

Founders on Uncommon Mentorship have launched: they sell an offer or have at least 1 paying client. They book 2 or 4 one-hour sessions a month with their mentor and send written questions between sessions.

Most of them came from a corporate career and are running a business for the first time. Mentors work from the same method as Plan A and the Uncommon Toolkits, so a founder hears one consistent approach.

  • Hold 60-minute 1:1 sessions on Zoom with founders on Uncommon Mentorship, including Plan A graduates in their included month of mentoring.
  • Help founders work through the decisions in front of them: their offer, pricing, finding clients, sales conversations, content, systems and money.
  • Answer written questions between sessions within 2 business days.
  • Share what worked in your own business, what did not, and what you would do differently.
  • Say so when a question is outside your experience, and bring us in so the founder gets the right answer.
  • Hold a free 30-minute trial call with founders who want to meet you before they choose a plan.
  • Mark completed sessions and no-shows in your mentor dashboard, which records your pay each month.

Check the must-haves.

  • You have run at least 1 solo expertise business successfully, such as consulting, coaching, advisory, fractional work, a productized service or a digital product built on your expertise. We do not ask for revenue numbers. We ask to see the business: your website, what you sell and what your clients say.
  • You found clients yourself, without a platform or an employer sending them to you.
  • You give direct, specific feedback, and you stay patient with founders who are new to running a business.
  • You can tell a founder “I do not know, and here is how we will find out.”
  • You can hold sessions on Zoom in English and reply to messages within 2 business days.

Stand out with these extras.

  • Experience coaching, managing, teaching or mentoring adults.
  • A business in a field many of our founders come from, such as operations, finance, marketing, healthcare, tech, HR or law.
  • You have hired contractors, or built systems that let your business run while you take time off.
  • An audience you built yourself, on a newsletter, a podcast or social media.
  • You speak a second language fluently.

Follow the 3 steps to join.

  • Application. The form below takes about 30 minutes, including a 5-minute video answer to a question a founder might ask you.
  • Video call. 30 minutes on Zoom to talk about your business and how you mentor.
  • Set-up. You sign your mentor agreement and learn our method from the Plan A curriculum and our mentor guide, then we set up your mentor profile, your booking calendar and your dashboard.

Plan your hours and pay.

You earn $60 for every 60-minute session you complete, and that rate covers your written replies between sessions. We pay you once a month for the sessions your dashboard records, so you never send an invoice.

The free 30-minute trial call is paid at $30 when the founder goes on to book sessions with you.

You choose your available times in your booking calendar, and founders pick a mentor from the profiles on our site. The number of sessions you get depends on how many founders choose you, so we cannot promise a set number.

Grow into coaching Plan A at $90 an hour.

Mentors who have worked with us for at least 3 months, with strong feedback from founders, can train to coach Plan A, our 8-week launch program.

Plan A coaching pays $90 an hour: $60 for the session and $30 for reviewing the founder’s work each week.
